(KTNC) - Missouri Governor Jay Nixon applauded Mound City School students for their work in the classroom during an assembly at the school Tuesday morning. The governor recognized students for what he called their continued academic achievement.
Mound City Public Schools scored a 93.9-percent on the 2013 Missouri School Improvement Program Annual Performance Report. The governor also cited the district’s attendance and graduation rates, which have also been consistently higher than the state average – including a 100-percent graduation rate each of the last two years.
The governor also challenged the students to continue working hard in the classroom. He said that it's imprtant for students to work hard as they prepare to compete in today's global marketplace.
Governor Nixon also commended the Mound City High School for its recent designation as an A-plus school. Under the program, qualified students can apply for scholarships at any Missouri community college.
The program has been around for more than 20 years, but Mound City has not been eligible for the program until this year.
Mound City Superintendent Ken Eaton says they’re proud of the students, parents, teachers and staff for their accomplishments and their commitment to education.
Governor Nixon announced recently that he hopes to fully fund Missouri’s foundation formula for public schools by the end of his term in 2016.
