Holidays Tough For Blood Donations
12/11/2013

(KAIR)--Millions of Americans each year depend on the life saving gift of blood to save their life or the life of a loved one.

Hospitals are almost always in short supply of blood, but the holiday season can especially be a tough time to keep the supply full. Stan Tate is the Spokesman for the Community Blood Center in Kansas City, and he says there are multiple reasons as to why there is a short supply. He says that people are busier than usual this time of year and donating can get pushed to the side. Also, with the cold weather, people are less likely to want to leave the house. Tate adds that with that winter weather comes school closings, a situation in which parents would stay home with their child rather than go to work where there may be a blood drive taking place.

Tate says there is almost always an increase in incidences during the holidays that require a steady source of blood. Accidents always happen, but with everyone out and about during the holiday season, these accidents can be more likely, and hospitals and doctors need to be prepared as much as possible.

If you are interested in donating gift of life and want to find out where you can do so, just go to the Community Blood Center website at www.safealifenow.org. Just click on the schedule an appointment icon and enter your zip code to find a blood drive near you.
