(KAIR)--The prevalence of winter weather this time of the year make conditions ideal for icy roads and navigating these hazards can be quite difficult. Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie says driving on a road with ice should be done as carefully as possible, with common sense being the biggest factor. If roads are too slick, it is best to just stay home and stay safe.
However, there is always a chance that hitting an ice spot can't be avoided. Laurie says even if you hit an ice spot, you can recover easily. The best thing to do is to not slam on your brakes, as this can only make things worse. It is best to just slow down, and not to jerk the steering wheel one way or the other and hopefully, you will regain traction quickly.
In the event that you do experience a wreck, Laurie states that the best thing you can do is to ensure everyone involved is safe and taken care of. The first thing you should do is to call 911 and report where you are located so that help can arrive as soon as possible. Any children involved should also be taken care of quickly.
In addition to calling 911 to report an ice related wreck, you can also call the Atchison County Sheriff's office at 367-0216.
