Concealed Carry to be Allowed at Hiawatha City Hall
12/19/2013

(KNZA)--Concealed carry permit holders will be allowed to carry guns into the Hiawatha City Hall beginning January 1st.
Hiawatha Police Chief John Defore recommended at this week’s City Commission meeting that the “ No Gun” signage be taken down due to the cost of providing adequate security.  Defore said he can’t afford to add more officers and buy the metal detectors needed to provide security. Commissioners voiced no objection.
State law requires cities and counties to allow concealed carry permit holders to carry guns into public buildings unless adequate security measures are in place.
The law went into effect in July, but the city sought a six-month exemption through the end of the year.
