(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has approved proceeding with the drilling of two new wells north of town as the city looks for a low nitrate water source.
Public Works Director Dave Grimm says engineers have defined two locations where they want to sink a five-inch casing, and pump about four million gallons of water to confirm the amount of water and nitrate level. Grimm presented commissioners last week with an estimate from Drill-Well LLC, of Falls City, in the amount of $19,108 for the drilling of the two wells, which commissioners approved. The cost will be paid from the city’s water fund.
The city of Hiawatha is under a consent order from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to address the nitrates in its water supply system, which at times over the years have exceeded the maximum level allowed.
