(KAIR)--Atchison County is joining several other Kansas counties in an effort to keep a vital source of funding from stopping completely. During their meeting Tuesday afternoon, the Atchison County Commission passed a resolution showing their support in either keeping mortgage registration fees in place or having an alternate source of funding. Commission Chair Jeff Schuele says this piece of legislation, which is currently being considered by Governor Sam Brownback, seeks to stop this funding completely, and was initially put forth by the Kansas Bankers Association.
Schuele says that Atchison County has benefited greatly from these fees in the past. The county received about $143,000 from them in the past year alone. A portion of that money goes to the Kansas Heritage Trust Foundation which is used for grants for historical structures in the area.
Schuele says if these fees are reduced or taken away completely, it could cause some disruption in county operations.
