Atchison County Treasurer Responds To Holiday Claims
02/04/2014

(KAIR)--Don't blame the tax office for not having Veterans Day off.

That's the word coming from  Atchison County Treasurer Sheila Bilderback in response to a recent statement from Commission Chair Jeff Schuele stating that one reason county employees will not have the holiday off is because of a limited window to pay property taxes.

Bilderback says that even with one less day, there should be ample time for residents to pay their taxes by the due date of December 20th. She adds that she tries to get tax statements out by the first of November, but by law, she does not have to mail them until December 15th. Most taxpayers either mail their taxes in, or they come into the office the week of December 20th.

Bilderback says it had been suggested by Schuele at a commission meeting earlier this month to take Veteran's Day off the list of county holidays and to change the name of the birthday to a floating holiday. There had been no discussion about how not having a way to pay taxes online would have anything to do with this.

In response, Schuele says that it was never his intention to blame anyone for taking away the holiday, and not having an online method of paying taxes, along with the amount of business days in that window, was something that was considered when the commission made their decision.
