(KAIR)--A double vehicle Wednesday afternoon head-on Atchison County crash sends four to the hospital.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reports it happened on U.S. Highway 73, just south of 230th Road, shortly before 3:45.
That's when 37-year-old Leavenworth resident Robert Cummings, Junior, driving northbound, attempted to pass a line of vehicles in a passing zone.
However, 42-year-old Atchison resident Donald Bird was southbound at the same time, and the two vehicles collided head-on in the southbound lane despite attempts to avoid each other.
The patrol says Cummings was transported to the Atchison Hospital with disabling injuries. His passenger, 40-year-old Daniel Russell, of Shawnee, was transported to Heartland Regional Medical Center in Saint Joseph with unspecified injuries.
Bird was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas with disabling injuries.
His passenger, 44-year-old James Bird, of Atchison, was taken to the Atchison Hospital with unspecified injuries.
The patrol says everyone was buckled up when the wreck happened.
