Keep Snow Away From Gas Meters
02/06/2014

(KLZA) Most of us have had our fair share of the snow this winter.  While it can be pretty to look at,  snow and ice buildup on natural gas meters can create safety problems and it can also cut off the flow of natural gas to your homes and buildings.

Falls City Utility Superintendent Alan Romine reminds everyone not to cover up your gas meter when moving snow.  Snow and ice covering the meter can create a number of problems.  If you do get a buildup of snow or ice on your gas meter you should gently remove it.  Do not use a shovel or other type of tool so not to cause damage.  Snow should also be cleared away from the outdoor vent on high efficiency furnaces.

While we have hearing about possible propane shortages and the quickly rising costs of propane, Romine says while we don’t have a supply problem with natural gas to Falls City, you can only receive so much from the supplier due to the size of the delivery system.

It has been a cold winter and while you can’t judge daily usage, Romine says Falls City Utility customers have been using more gas for heating homes the past couple of months than on average for the past several years.
