Atchison Working To Move To Curbside Recycling Faster
02/21/2014

(KAIR)--The city of Atchison has been working for the past few months to move to a single source, curbside recycling method.

The new process would not only make recycling easier for city residents, but it would also bring the city into compliance with the state's recycling laws. Legislators are taking the appropriate steps to try and get the new process to the city as quickly as possible.

Atchison City Manager Trey Cocking says Democratic State Representative Jerry Henry has introduced a house bill on behalf of the city of Atchison, that would allow the city to start curbside recycling at a much accelerated pace than what is currently allowed under state law. Right now, the city has to wait two years before they can implement the new process, but if the bill passes, then curbside recycling can begin after a public hearing followed by twenty-one days of feedback from city residents.

City officials met with the state House Local Government Committee Tuesday. Members of the committee are working to get the bill into the entire house by this coming Tuesday so it can be voted on.
