Big Prizes Promised In Circulating Scam
02/24/2014

(MSC News)--Outrageous claims accompany another scam circulating across the local region, with a phone call, or email, notifying would be victims that a huge amount of money has been won.

According to local law enforcement, the intended target is told they've won a prize from “Mega-Millions,” “Publishers Clearinghouse,” or someone else, and need to verify when they'll be home in order to receive the prize. The caller tells them the information is necessary because the winnings will be delivered in an armored truck, accompanied by FBI agents and attorneys. Bank account information is also being sought by some callers, saying that's needed so the money can be directly deposited.

In some cases, if the would-be victim is not home, a voice message is left asking to be called back about prize information.

Local law enforcement says to never return such calls, which can be a scam in and of itself, racking up high rates on the victim's phone bill.

Additionally, in all such cases, no personal information should be provided and hanging up on the caller is the best bet to avoid being ripped off.
