Officials Urge Severe Weather Preparedness
03/03/2014

(KAIR)--Most Kansas residents know that the  weather can change in the blink of an eye, and being as prepared as possible is essential to keep you and your family as safe as possible.

According to the National Weather Service, last year was the quietest season in terms of tornado count since 1994. There were 56 tornadoes reported, with only one injury reported. Atchison County officials are warning residents that even though last year was quiet, this year may not be.

Atchison County Emergency Management Director Wes Lanter urges everyone to take place in the tornado safety drill, that will include the testing of the county outdoor weather siren, that will take place Tuesday afternoon at 1:30. He adds the sirens are also tested each Wednesday morning at 10:00 through the month of November.

Lanter says that these sirens are meant to warn people to seek shelter in the event of severe weather, and cannot be heard indoors. He encourages everyone to listen to local media for the latest updates, and to purchase a weather radio to stay informed as much as possible. Radios can be purchased for $30 at the County Emergency Management office, located at 506 Howard in Effingham.
