(KAIR)--Possession of marijuana is still illegal in the state of Kansas.
That word from Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt who issued a press release Wednesday reminding residents that despite the legalization of the drug in neighboring Colorado, it cannot be brought across the border into Kansas.
Atchison County Attorney Jerry Kuckleman says the penalty for marijuana possession for a first time offender is generally a misdemeanor and carries a fine of up to $1,000 and up to one year in the county jail. He adds that typically, first time offenders are put on probation and sent to treatment. However, a second offense is a felony under Kansas law and carries a thirteen month prison sentence for a person that has no other prior record.
