(KAIR)--After a month long legal battle, a settlement has been reached regarding eminent domain in Atchison County.
County Commission Chair Jeff Schuele says the county reached a tentative agreement with the trust representing Ethel Campell. Campbell's family owns the half acre the county wants to move a bridge onto, but Schuele says a compromise was made. The county will now only use .35 of a acre and pay Campbell $1,141. Schuele says part of the compromise was going back to the engineer in charge of the project to see if there was some way the amount of acrage needed could be reduced.
Schuele says the engineering firm is already makes plans to move the project forward now that a settlement has been reached. A new plan has been made and the county should have more details in the coming weeks.
Schuele says that he thinks everyone had to give up something and come to some kind of agreement. He adds this is not typical, and it is very rare to go forward with eminent domain.
Campbell was originally offered $1,700 for the half acre, but has said that her family's history was more important to her than the money.
