(KNZA)--Planning is underway, and registration opened, for the centennial commemoration of Hiawatha's Halloween celebration. A special gift recently given in support of the effort is drawing gratitude from the event's organizers.
Well known Hiawatha resident Mary Collins is remembered for her festive spirit during the holidays, including Halloween. That love of the October 31st tradition is now immortalized in a $3,000 donation, earmarked for Hiawatha's 100th Halloween Frolic, given by the family of Collins who died in January. “This donation is really going to help put a dent in making the parade special,” Hiawatha Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Stacy Babb tells MSC News. “We hope to do her proud this year.”
Babb has personal memories of Collins' devotion to Hiawatha's Halloween. “Her house was my favorite house to walk by around Halloween time,” Babb says. “She just selflessly spent so much time at Halloween to put together the goodie bags for the all of the kids in the costume contest [and was] a judge for that. It was just a special time of year and she made it more special.”
The donation was presented to representatives of the Chamber Board earlier this month.
