48 Star Flag Presented to Brown County
04/08/2014

(KNZA)--There’s a new addition on display at the Brown County Courthouse---a framed 48 star U.S. flag.

Representatives of the Hiawatha American Legion donated the flag, which commemorates all those who served, to the county during a presentation Monday.

Sam Schuetz said the Legion felt the courthouse would be the best place to display the flag.  The flag was previously presented to the family of a fallen veteran and was recently given to the American Legion.

LaVerne Dunavan made the frame for the flag, which has been erected on a 1st floor lobby wall at the courthouse.

On July 4th, 1912, the U.S. flag grew to 48 stars with the addition of New Mexico and Arizona.  The flag flew over the nation for 47 years—longer than any another previous American flag.
