Rock Port School District Bond Approved
04/08/2014

(KTNC) --  The Rock Port R-2 School District will be able to build a new gymnasium.

Based on unofficial results from Tuesday’s Municipal election, nearly 70-percent of district voters approved a proposition that will allow the school to borrow $2.7 million to build a new competition gymnasium. 466 voted in favor of the measure and 203 voted against it; 57.1-percent approval was needed for the proposition to pass.

The district’s debt service levy will remain the same, at 71.18-cents per $100 of assessed valuation.

The bond issue was one of two propositions the Rock Port School District had on Tuesday’s ballot. District voters also approved a 40-cent permanent operating tax levy, with 473 in favor and 192 against.

The 40-cent permanent levy will replace a 50-cent temporary levy that is due to sunset this year. The levy will pay for educational programs, technology, utilities, building expenses, maintenance, staff compensation, and other operational needs of the district.

A few other propositions were settled in Atchison County Tuesday. County voters overwhelmingly approved a half-cent countywide sales tax to fund the local share of road rock. The tax will be in effect for the next 10 years.

The proposition passed with 1,065 in favor and 295 against.
Voters in the Phelps City Special Road District approved a proposition to continue a 35-cent levy for the next four years. That measure passed 6-to-1.

Voters in Tarkio rejected a proposed local use tax. The use tax would have been the same rate as the local sales tax, which is currently two-percent.

In contested races in Atchison County, Matthew Heits, Douglas Miller, and Deanna Beck were elected to fill three seats on the Fairfax School Board. Eight people sought election. Beck’s 96 vote total was one more than Zac Smith’s 95 votes.
Clay Vogler, Jeremy Davis, and Rochelle Henagan were elected to the Rock Port School Board.

Donald Noland was elected Mayor of Tarkio, with 168 votes. Rosalie Woodring had 108 votes and Dena Wennihan 83 votes.

Voter turnout was 34-percent in Atchison County. Tuesday’s results are unofficial.
