Peru State Student Honored
04/11/2014

(KTNC) --  Peru State College sophomore Allie Buesing, an exercise science major from Cozad, has been named a 2014 Newman Civic Fellow. The Campus Compact announced the recognition this week.
Buesing is the third Peru State student to be named a Newman Civic Fellow in the past three years.
Jamie Theye, a senior from Odell, earned the honor in 2013 and Kesha Beethe of Tecumseh was honored as a junior in 2012.
The award is named for Dr. Frank Newman, one of the founders of Campus Compact. It honors 197 student leaders annually from across the country. Those selected have demonstrated a personal commitment to understanding the root cause of social issues and finding lasting solutions for challenges facing communities.
Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents, representing about six million students.
Buesing’s honor is attributed to her work with the Children’s Health, Activity and Nutrition Community Engagement Initiative. That is a partnership between Peru State, Auburn and Johnson-Brock schools, the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, and Auburn Family Health Center, to encourage healthier lifestyles among area children and their families.
Buesing is currently the president of the Physical Education, Activity and Kinesiology Students organization, the historian of Phi Beta Lambda, a Resident Life assistant, student ambassador, and an AmeriCorps Services Scholar. She has also received funding and training to lead a large-scale service initiative to combat childhood obesity in Nebraska.
Buesing has been accepted into the Public Health Early Admittance Student Track at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she will pursue a master’s degree in public health after she graduates from Peru State.
