(KNZA)-- The city of Troy and Nemaha County Fire District #2 have each been awarded $300,000 state grants.
The Kansas Department of Commerce made the announcement Tuesday of the grant awards through the Kansas Small Towns Environment Program or KAN STEP.
The city of Troy will use the funding to renovate the Doniphan County community’s existing library to better serve local residents. The improvement will involve construction of a space that will be used as a children’s library.
The grant money will go to purchase materials for renovation. However, one the stipulations for the grant is that all construction and labor must be through volunteer effort. The library hosted community meetings last fall to gather support for the renovation project, and was met with enthusiasm by the community. Construction is to get underway this fall.
Nemaha County Rural Fire District #2 will use their funding to construct a new fire station in Corning to house its firefighting equipment and offer training space to better serve the 25 volunteer firefighters.
The total estimated project cost is nearly $597,000. The grant funds will go to purchase the materials for project, with volunteers providing the “ sweat equity” for the construction of the new fire station.
KAN STEP is an ongoing, competitive self-help program for communities to address water, sewer and public building needs through greater initiative and with fewer dollars.
