(KNZA)--The city of Hiawatha has finalized plans for this year’s 4th of July celebration.
The Hiawatha City Commission voted Monday evening to hold the city’s fireworks display on Thursday, July 3rd.
The commission accepted a bid from Aerial FX Inc., of St. Joseph, for purchase of the fireworks for the display at a cost of $5,000. Bids were received from two companies.
The commission also voted to allow residents to shoot off fireworks at the City Lake July 3rd-6th. Residents will be able to discharge fireworks July 3rd-5th until midnight and on the 6th until 10 p.m.
In other business, an additional change order was approved for phase 1 of the city’s sanitary sewer system improvement project. The change order is for the replacement of a sewer line underneath the railroad tracks between Delaware and Shawnee Streets that has collapsed at an estimated cost of $139,554. The commission also authorized Mayor Crosby Gernon to sign an agreement with the Union Pacific Railroad for the project.
And the commission accepted a bid from Chemquest Inc., of Topeka, to sandblast and paint the slide and bathrooms at the Hiawatha Aquatic Park for a cost of $19,540.
