04/24/2014

(KAIR)--Democratic State Representative Jerry Henry took some time out of his busy schedule to attend Tuesday afternoon's Atchison County Commission meeting and update commissioners on some of the legislation currently being worked on in Topeka.

Commission Chair Jeff Schuele says that Henry provided a good update on the education funding bill. Henry said that sixty three cents from every dollar of tax revenue that is generated in the state is put back into schools. However, Schuele adds that it sounds like education funding will continue to be discussed.

Henry also discussed the the fixtures impact bill, which changes what items constitute real and personal property for purpose of property taxes, and what impact it would have on counties. The Senate has added some amendments to the bill, covering exemptions the House did not.

Schuele that the bill the commission was most interested in was the one concerning the elimination of the mortgage registration fee, which would take away a significant amount of income to the county. Henry told the commission that the bill had been sent back to the House taxation committee, along with a handful of other bills to be reworked.
