(KAIR)--The heavy hand of government is being used in an attempt to beautify Atchison, as city officials served administrative search warrants on four properties, authorizing them to search for, and remove items that violate the city's nuisance ordnance.
The city's Community Development, Public Works, and Police Departments worked hand in hand to clean up junk, debris, and tow inoperable vehicles from the different properties.
City Community Development Director Stephanie Lief says the city code allows the city to step in and abate a nuisance when the property owner fails to do so after being warned repeatedly. She says the warrants were issued because there have been controversial issues in the past with some property owners, and the warrants allow the police to feel better equipped to handle the situation.
All costs of the cleanup will be charged to the property owners, and any fees not paid will be assessed to the properties. Items removed from the properties were disposed of at the Atchison County Transfer Station.
