(KNZA)--Brown County will seek a state grant for the installation of high-intensity reflective road signs to meet new federal standards.
The County Commission on Monday signed applications prepared by Engineer Tom Bennett with BG Consultants, of Manhattan, for each of the three commissioner districts that will be submitted to the Kansas Department of Transportation for a grant to pay 100 percent of the cost of the new signs.
A total of $187,340 in grant funding will be sought. The county will be responsible for the cost to have Bennett’s firm assess each sign on more than 276 miles of county roads to determine which need to be replaced to meet federal standards. That work will be done at a total cost of $41,325. Bennett said he believes most of the signs will have to be replaced.
Bennett said the county should learn in two to three months if the grant application is successful. If so, the state would let bids by July 1st, 2015 for a contractor to replace the signs.
