(KAIR)--As the Atchison Police Department continues to investigate a series of vehicle thefts in the city, they are warning residents to be take proper precautions to better ensure they do not become a victim.
Police Chief Mike Wilson says that in most of the recent thefts, the vehicle was not the initial target. They believe that the thieves initially set out to burglarize the vehicle, and just happened to find the keys inside. He adds there are a number of things you can do to prevent your vehicle from being taken, but the biggest would be to lock your car and take the keys with you.
Wilson says that these vehicles are being taken during all hours of the day, though most were taken during the evening. He adds that many recent thefts, both vehicle and residential have also taken place during the day.
So far, five vehicles have been taken and returned soon after; either to the exact spot from which they were taken or a short distance away. Wilson says there are no suspects yet, but the investigation is ongoing.
