(KAIR)--The Atchison City Commission has approved new ordinance that would regulate yard sales in the city.
Community Development Director Stephanie Leif came before the Commission during a recent meeting to propose the regulations, which would include the number of yard sales that could occur on a lot, how often they could occur during a year, and stipulations on how they should be cleaned up.
Leif says that for the most part, officials have found that most people hold the typical yard sale that takes place over a weekend and is quickly cleaned up, but there are some that go on a bit longer, and they are the ones targeted by the new regulations. These are the kinds of sales that turn into home based businesses where people display goods in their yard for a very long time with the idea of selling them to people who may be passing by. Leif says this can impact the neighborhood, and often, things are not kept up and can become a nuisance.
Atchison resident Betty Dorsey came before the Commission to voice her concern over the proposed rules, speciffically, the one regulating sales held on a vacant lot. Leif says exceptions could be made on a case by case basis, and discretion will be used.
Commissioner Jack Bower suggested that the maximum amount of allowable sales a year be changed from three to four. Commissioners agreed to the change, and the amended ordinance was passed 4-1. Commissioner Rita Hartman cast the lone no vote.
