(KNZA)--Voters in Holton's USD 336 have said yes to a $21.5 million bond issue for the construction of a new elementary school.
The unofficial results of Tuesday's election, focused on the special question, show that supporters cast 934 votes in favor of the bond issue while 756 opponents said no. A 43 percent voter turnout was reported.
The results will become official following a canvass of the ballots during Monday's meeting of the Jackson County Commission.
Now that the public has given its approval, the district will be able to purchase property to the west of the current Colorado Elementary School, demolish the original 1954 building and construct a new two-story structure in its place.
The 1986 building addition will be renovated for administrative support offices, which the district currently rents.
The new 78,200-square-foot school will replace both of Holton’s existing elementary schools.
The state will reimburse the district for 55 percent of the construction costs, or $11.8 million. District taxpayers will be responsible for about $9.6 million of the total amount, which will be financed over a 25-year period.
The last Holton school bond election, seeking $21.3 million and held in November of 2008, failed when it went before the voters.
