LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP)-- Authorities say an inmate's death at the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth is being investigated as an apparent homicide.

Forty-eight-year-old Jeremy Nemerov died Monday night at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.

Prison spokesman Treavor Kroger says Nemerov was found unresponsive in his cell on April 24, the day after he arrived at the prison.

The Leavenworth Times reports an autopsy had not yet been performed on Tuesday.

The FBI is handling the homicide investigation.

Nemerov was serving 6 1/2 years for a conviction in Missouri for conspiracy to possess pseudoephedrine with intent to manufacture methamphetamine.
