(KAIR)--The city of Atchison has moved forward in the process of repairing and updating curbs and gutters in the city.
According to Public Works Director Justin Pregont, the city spends about $1 million every three years on asphalt work. He says that while this is appropriate, what has not been done traditionally is to replace and repair the curbs and gutters immediately adjacent to those streets. He says that one of the first things he wanted the Commission to consider when he came on the job, was that if they were going to resurface a street, then they should also look at the adjacent curb, because these two things are undeniably tied together.
Pregont says that some of the planned work is being done to better comply with standards set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Improvements include curb improvements and wheelchair ramp improvements, which he says is really important for our community.
Pregont presented the improvement plan before the Commissioners during a recent meeting, and explained that the work would be split up between two different contractors, with both having already submitted bids. The first concerns concrete provements, and those will be preformed by Bottorff Construction, who submitted the lone bid of $424,617.69. The second component deals with asphalt work, and Bettis Asphalt submitted the low bid at $861,636.75.
The Commission approved both bids on a 4-1 vote, with Commissioner Larry Purcell casting the lone no vote.
