(KAIR)--An Atchison family preparing a home for sale received a surprise when they discovered a pair of grenades on the property.
Lieutenant Tim Stout from the Atchison Police Department reports that officers were called to a residence located in the 1400 block of North Second Street for a report of found property just before 10:00 Tuesday morning. Upon arrival, they met with several people who had been working on the property, and had found a rifle grenade and a hand grenade in a box in the attic of the home.
Atchison Police quickly secured the scene and contacted the Leavenworth Police Department's bomb disposal squad for assistance. The grenades were found to have active fuses after a x-ray was performed at the scene, but officials could not determine if explosive powder was present.
Bomb disposal officers removed the explosives from the area for proper disposal, and the scene was cleared shortly before 1:00.
