(KAIR)--Atchison residents may have noticed a strong odor of chlorine in their water recently, but officials say it is safe to consume.
City Manager Trey Cocking says the smell is a result of a switch to free chlorine from combined chlorine to fight some of the musty odor that had been present in the water.
The musty odor was the result of a change in conditions in the Missouri river during the last week.
Cocking says this kind of thing should not be a problem next year, when the city's new ozone treatment system is fully operational at the main water treatment plant.
