USD 115 Board Approves Technology Purchases

(KMZA)--The Nemaha Central USD 115 Board of Education has approved technology purchases that will enable every 2nd through 12th grade student to have their own device.

During a special meeting last Friday, the board approved proposals for the purchase of 250 iPads and 250 laptop computers for a total cost of $337,502, plus an additional $80,842 for software, cases and auxiliary equipment. Pre-school, kindergarten and 1st grade classes will also receive devices.

Superintendent Darrel Kohlman recommended that funds from capital outlay be used to purchase the devices and supplemental general funds be used for the other items.

Kohlman said by purchasing the equipment out-right instead of on a four-year payment plan, the district would save slightly over $14,000 in interest costs.

The board voted 6-1 to approve the purchase of the devices plus the additional required items and that funding come from the funds as recommended. Board member Roger Hermesh cast the lone “ no” vote.

Following two executive sessions, the board approved a tentative agreement for the 2014-2015 school year with the Nemaha Central Education Association. The agreement calls for an average salary increase 3.3 percent for teachers.
