(KAIR)--Joe Friday, the black cat who served as the unofficial Atchison City Hall mascot passed away Monday. He was ten years old.
According to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson, Friday was let in by a city official nine years ago, and has been a mainstay since then. He roamed all over the building, but stayed mostly in the police department, since there is usually someone there twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Wilson adds that he was immediately accepted by employees, and soon became therapeutic to many who had stressful days. There were even visitors to City Hall who would routinely come in and ask where Friday was. Wilson says that everyone is saddened by his passing, and will greatly miss his presence.
City Clerk Deb Clem, whose office is next to City Human Resources Director Lori Moore, says that Friday would be sitting by their office door each morning, waiting for them to arrive and fill a special plastic martini glass with water just for him. He would drink, and sometimes make his way to the office window where he would spend some time watching the birds that would gather at the various feeders outside.
Wilson says there will be no formal service for Joe Friday, but there have been multiple conversations among City Hall staff this week discussing how much he meant to everyone there, and how much he will be missed.
