John Carl Anderson

(KAIR)--A wanted fugitive leads numerous law enforcement officers on a pursuit across Atchison County Thursday night.

The determined suspect, identified as 32-year-old Atchison resident John Anderson, failed to stop when a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper noticed his pick-up truck didn't have a rear license plate.

Beginning at the intersection of Atchison's 14th Street and U.S. Highway 59, the pursuit, which included the Atchison County Sheriff's Department, the Atchison Police Department, and the use of the Patrol's helicopter, began around 7:45 and didn't come to an end until 9:15

During that time, Anderson led authorities across city streets, along local highways and down dusty county roads until he crashed his truck into a barbed wire fence as he drove into a field, located at U.S. Highway 73 and 262nd Road.  Despite his attempt to flee on foot, Anderson found himself surrounded, and with the helicopter hovering above the southern Atchison County location, Anderson surrendered to the authorities.

Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie says Anderson was found to be in possession of a firearm and narcotics, allegedly carried in a backpack he tried to abandon while on foot.

Anderson has been pursued by local authorities several times in the recent past due to outstanding felony warrants, both from Atchison and Brown Counties.

He was booked into the Atchison County Jail and faces numerous charges including felon in possession of a firearm, fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, reckless driving, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, at least four counts of criminal damage to property, possession of narcotics, numerous traffic infractions and the warrants.

It's possible, but not yet confirmed, that the truck Anderson was driving was stolen.

A female passenger was also arrested, but on charges unrelated to the pursuit.
