(KAIR)--Atchison city officials have taken another step towards making extensive repairs on a stretch of U.S. Highway 73.
During a recent meeting, the Atchison City Commission approved a resolution which puts the city in line for the maximum amount of funding available from the Kansas Department of Transportation to make the repairs.
The funding would be spread out over fiscal years 2015 and 2015.
City Public Works Director Justin Pregont says the project will be centered on an approximately 1.6 mile stretch of Highway 73, starting where it intersects with U.S. Highway 59. He says there would be quite a bit of work done on the road before the actual repairs are started. The scope of the project would include extensive, full depth repairs, with micro surfacing on top of that. He adds that the city has also been working with KDOT to do a comprehensive core drilling and geotechnical analysis of that section of highway.
Pregont says the total cost of the project is approximately $800,000. The city would be responsible for $430,000 over two years, and KDOT would pay for the remaining cost. The funding would start in 2015, but any actual repair work would not start until 2016. However, officials will be working before then to determine what kinds of repairs need to be done.
