Brown County, HCC, Reach Road Agreement
06/03/2014

(KNZA)--Highland Community College and Brown County have reached a tentative agreement for the improvement of a one-mile stretch of road leading to the college’s Klinefelter Farm, east of Hiawatha.

HCC President David Reist and Klinefelter Farm Project Manager Wendall Ganstrom met with the Brown County Commission Monday to further discuss the improvement of 230th Road.

The college wants the county take over maintenance of the Hiawatha Township road and for the road to be hard-surfaced.

Commissioner Steve Roberts, whose district’s the road is located in, says he believes its a viable option and will compile some cost figures for the chip and sealing of the road.  In addition, he will talk to Hiawatha Township about a road swap.

Roberts said the county would be willing to do the dirt work in preparation for the chip and sealing.  Reist said the HCC Foundation would pay for the base rock and for the chip and sealing.

Commissioner Warren Ploeger said a written agreement needs to be drawn up between the college and county.

Ganstrom says usage of the conference center at the Klinefelter Farm is increasing.  A traffic counter installed by the Kansas Department of Transportation on 230th Road between Mulberry and Nighthawk Roads, showed an average of 64 vehicles per day traveled the road last month.
