(KMZA)--The clean up effort from Monday morning's train derailment in the Marshall County community of Frankfort is continuing, leaving all lanes of K-9 Highway in the city closed.
Union Pacific Spokesman Mark Davis says the derailment happened around 9:00 in the morning, with the cause remaining under investigation. “The train was going from Wyoming to an electric utility in Texas,” Davis tells MSC News. “The train had a total 137 cars of coal [when] they experienced a 12 car derailment there in Frankfort. Fortunately, no injuries.”
According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, K-9, between the K-44 junction at Blue Rapids to the K-99 junction south of Frankfort, remains closed, meaning motorists must choose an alternate route of travel.
It's likely, if weather allows, that K-9 could reopen sometime Sunday.
The rail line itself reopened around 9:45 Tuesday morning following the replacement of around 500 feet of track, less than the 1,000 feet originally believed to be damaged.
