(MSC News)--It's confirmed--officials now say it was two tornadoes that caused damage in Nemaha and Brown Counties late Tuesday night.
National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist Chad Omitt says it was an EF 3, with an estimated wind speed of 140 miles an hour, that touched down in Nemaha County, while an EF 1 struck in southern Brown County with an estimated peak wind of 100 miles an hour.
The Bern area of Nemaha County was hit hard. Sheriff Rich Vernon says the tornado touched down around 4 miles west of Bern, near the intersection of Highways K-63 and K-71. That left a path of damage to the south and east, stretching around 7 miles.
County Emergency Preparedness Director Todd Swart says 5 homes were destroyed and the clean-up effort continued through Wednesday.
The Bern Community Center is serving as a centralized location for volunteers, officials and the Nemaha County Health Department which has been providing tetanus shots. Donations are being accepted for some affected families.
The Red Cross is being joined by the Salvaton Army in providing assistance to the community.
In Brown County, the tornado touched down about 1.5 miles east of Willis and traveled about 2.5 miles to north of Everest. At the Glen Leitch residence north of Everest, the twister is to blame for ripping the roof off his house and destroying several grain bins. Damage was also reported at other farmsteads in the area. Also 52 empty Union Pacific rail cars were blown over east of Willis.
Despite the damage, no serious injuries were reported.
