(KAIR)--As summer weather approaches, and the temperatures start to rise, many Americans start thinking about embarking on a summer vacation trip.
That, according to stats released by AAA which state that nearly two thirds of U.S adults are planning to take a trip between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Many will be using these trips for a family bonding experience, with nearly one in three taking family trips.
However, traveling as a family, presents some unique challenges. Kansas State University Child Development Specialist Bradford Wiles says there is a lot of planning that goes into making a summer trip fun for everyone. He says the excitement of getting started can wear off very quickly, so it's up to the parents to prepare for the travel, and for all the stops that go with it.
If families are planning to travel by air, Wiles urges parents to build a lot of time into their schedule for delays, and be prepared to deal with those delays. He recommends having extra food on hand as you never want to run out of food when you are traveling with a child. Also, having a variety of toys can do a lot to entertain your child during those delays.
Once you board the plane, Wiles suggests letting other passengers know that you are traveling with a child.
Wiles adds that if children start to misbehave, and you find yourself getting stressed, it is good to remember that you want them to remember this trip forever.
