(KMZA)--The 35th annual re-ride over the Pony Express National Historic Trail is underway and several local stops are planned along the route.
The re-ride began June 11th in Sacrameto, California and will end Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Along their way, the riders will be making stops in Marysville, Seneca and Horton. They are scheduled to arrive in Marysville around 9:15 Friday evening, at the Pony Express Museum in Seneca around 4:15 Saturday morning, and in Horton around 9:15 Saturday morning. Each stop is scheduled for 15 minutes to give people time to meet the riders.
To celebrate the re-ride, the Seneca Area Chamber of Commerce and Seneca Downtown Impact will hold the 4th annual Pony Express Re-Ride Party Friday evening from 6 to 9 on Main Street. Activities will include a BBQ, beer garden, music, bounce house, bingo, photo booth and more.
Schmelzle says because the Pony Express riders are to come through Seneca early Saturday morning, a mock re-ride is planned Friday evening at 8.
Personal mail and commemorative letters are being carried by horseback in relays, more than 19-hundred miles over the historic trail through 8 states. Around 600 riders are taking part in the re-ride, riding in relays of 1 to 5 miles.
