(KAIR)--An Atchison woman who allegedly removed a check from the home of an acquaintance is facing a variety of charges related to the case.

According to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson, 35-year-old Martha Ellis allegedly removed a check from the home of an acquaintance located in the 1200 block of Highland Avenue sometime during the day on June 9th.  Later that same day, Ellis allegedly forged her friend's signature on the check, and tried to use it at a local Wal-Mart.

The theft was reported several days later, and police forwarded the results of their investigation to the County Attorney's office for review. An warrant was issued for Ellis' arrest, and she was taken into custody at approximately 1:00 Wednesday afternoon.

Ellis is facing charges of theft, computer crime, and forgery.  Wilson says the computer crime charge stems from when Ellis signed her name on the store's computer after using the check to make a purchase.

Ellis posted a bond of nearly $5,000 and was released later Wednesday afternoon.
