(KAIR)--A High School Language Arts teacher at Leavenworth High School will receive one of the highest awards given to public educators.
According to a release from the National Education Association, Jeffery Baxter had been chosen to receive the 2015 California Casualty Award for Teaching Excellence. He is currently the 2014 Kansas Teacher of the Year, and a lifelong member of the Kansas NEA, which nominated him for the award.
Baxter is among 39 public educators who will be honored at the NEA Foundation's Salute to Excellence Gala, which is set to be held in Washington D.C on February 13th of next year. The high profile event attracts more than 850 of the nation's leaders from public education, philanthropy, and the private sector.
The educators were nominated by their NEA state affiliates, and each of their schools will receive a $650 award. From the 39 state awardees, five finalists will be selected to receive $10,000 cash awards. At the conclusion of the gala, one finalist will be named the nation's top educator and receive an additional $25,000.
Baxter was named the Kansas Teacher of the Year last November.
