(KTNC)--June could well set a record for tornadoes in Nebraska.
Climatologist Ken Dewey with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln says the state has been hit hard this month, with a record 63 tornadoes reported. Dewey says some of those reports may be duplicates, but the state should come out near the previous record of 48 tornadoes for the month of June.
On June 16, the day the tornado hit Pilger, there were 15 tornadoes reported. The next day, there were 23 tornado reports, in the same area of the state. Dewey says Nebraska has seen a similar pattern before, a decade ago when a tornado devastated Hallem, and then more storms followed in the same area a few days later.
Dewey expects the state to exit the severe storm pattern, as computer models indicate mild weather ahead with plenty of rain.
One positive impact of the severe weather, Dewey says, is that it brought more than 10-inches of rain to parts of Nebraska this month, ending the drought in many areas.
