(KAIR)--The Atchison USD 409 Board of Education has filled a spot on its board left vacant by the departure of former MGP Ingredients CEO Tim Newkirk.
Superintendent Susan Myers says the board held a special meeting Monday night to conduct interviews with the candidates who had submitted their applications by the June 20th deadline. Four applications were received, with three coming from former board members. The board then asked each candidate the same questions, and evaluated their responses. Once that was complete, a motion was made to appointed former member Bill Shipley to fill the vacant seat.
Myers says that Shipley had taken on multiple roles during his last term serving on the board. He has served as a Vice President as well as a negotiator. He allowed his last term to expire and did not seek re-election citing wanting to spend more time with his family and his business.
Shipley will serve out the remaining one year of Newkirk's term.
Myers says that he will be eligible to run for re election next April when four spots on the board will be up for grabs.
