Hiawatha City Budget Contains 1.7 mill levy increase
07/08/2014

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening approved for publication a proposed 2015 budget of nearly $6.3 million that contains a more than 1.7 mill property tax levy increase.

The budget contains an estimated tax rate of 47.53 mills, which is to raise just over one million dollars.

While the property tax levy is up over this year’s levy, it’s still lower than the 2013 levy.

Commissioner Steffen Shamburg says he thinks it’s a “ fiscally responsible budget”. Shamburg said the city is trying to build its fund balances back up after several years with with no mill levy increase. He noted a drop in revenues also played a factor in the need for a slight mill levy increase.

The Commission will consider adoption of the budget following a public hearing at their July 21st meeting.
