(KAIR)--For the fourth time in approximately one year, an Atchison intersection will be converted to a four way stop.
City Commissioners heard a proposal last month from Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont outlining the removal of traffic signals at the intersection of Sixth Street and Kansas Avenue. It had been decided to table the issue until further information could be gathered on various safety aspects regarding the intersection.
Pregont promised to gather the requested information, and came before Commissioners during their meeting Monday afternoon to present his findings.
He said that he spoke with Executive Director of Achievement Services Jerry Henry, about possible concerns some of their clients may have had about getting around in the downtown area; more specifically, in the previous three intersections that have been converted to a four way stop.
Henry reported that he was not aware of any reported problems, but did want assurance that the city would address any future concerns. Pregont said that the city is committed to total accessibility in the downtown area, and assured Henry that any problems would be addressed in a timely manner.
Commissioners voted 5-0 to covert the intersection to a four way stop.
Pregont says that the signals should be coming down within the next four weeks.
