(KTNC)--Pawnee City will not hire a code enforcement officer this year.
The City Council tabled action on a nuisance abatement contract with the Southeast Nebraska Development District following discussion Monday night. The council had considered the move as a way to clean up nuisance properties in town, but tabled the matter until at least January, when a new council is seated.
The budget factored into the council’s decision. The cost to have SENDD provide code enforcement is estimated at between $8,000 and $15,000 per year.
The council did approve action on two housing rehab grant projects. They approved a grant for one project totaling $24,995 and another for just over $12,000.
Pawnee City still has Housing Rehab Grant funds remaining. Residents can apply for the grants by filling out applications at City Hall.
The council also approved, on a 3-1 vote, the first reading of the salary ordinance. The ordinance calls for a three-percent across-the-board salary increase for all city employees, except seasonal workers. Councilman John Dahlgren voted against the ordinance.
The council will consider the ordinance again at its next meeting on July 28.
