Atchison Nearing End Of Budget Process
07/16/2014

(KAIR)--Atchison city officials meet Monday evening to discuss the city's budget for next year and to make some final recommendations before the final version is presented.

Two other meetings have been held in recent weeks, with various requests and proposals made. After the latest meeting, held last week, Commissioners were informed that another $450,000 had to be trimmed from the budget before it was ready.

City Manager Trey Cocking presented his recommended cuts during the recent meeting, including some to the general fund. Funding for slurry seal will be reduced by $15,000, and another $100,000 was eliminated next year for the facade loan program, but there is $100,000 available this year that is expected to roll over into next year.

Cocking adds that additional funds were freed after smaller cuts were made from the individual budgets of various city departments.

Adjustments were also made to the solid waste portion of the budget. Cocking says that the biggest thing discussed at the recent meeting concerning solid waste was the 1993 ballot question, looking to pay for the city's trash disposal costs with the solid waste money from the solid waste joint communications sales tax.

Cocking says that funding is also being allocated for street and sidewalk repairs, in addition to improvements to the city's aqueducts.

Cocking will now submit his recommended budget to City Commissioners during their meeting on July 21st. Commissioners will then have a week to submit any amendments they may have. The budget will then be published at least ten days before a public hearing, set to held on August 4th.
