West Nile Case Reported in SE Neb.
(KTNC)--The public health district that serves Gage, Saline, Thayer, Jefferson and Filmore Counties in southeast Nebraska has reported its first human case of West Nile Virus, this season.
Kim Plouzek of Public Health Solutions Emergency and Environmental Programs says the first human case in the district was discovered Sunday, a couple weeks before they usually see the peak season for West Nile, in August and September.
P-H-S would not disclose which county the case came from. The case is the second human case of West Nile reported in Nebraska this year. Plouzek described the P-H-S case as “moderate….not severe” and says they found out about the case through a physician visit by a person who was not feeling well.
West Nile Virus symptoms vary from person to person. Fewer than one in 100 develop severe illness marked by a high fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, convulsions, muscle weakness, or paralysis.
Plouzek says you can take precautions to reduce the chance of exposure by eliminating standing water and limiting outside exposure to mosquitoes at dawn and dusk. She also recommends using a mosquito repellant that contains DEET.
The health district conducts surveillance for infected pools of mosquitoes or birds. There have been no infected pools of mosquitoes detected, this year.
