08/12/2014

(KNZA)--Repairs will made to the roof of the building housing the Hiawatha Senior Citizens Center.
Steve Winter with the Hiawatha American Legion, which owns the building, presented the Brown County Commission on Monday with a bid from Midwest Coating, of Topeka, in the amount of $16,645 for the repair work.
The commission voted to pay for the repairs from the Commissioner’s fund.
In other action, Lori Gray with Services for the Elderly presented estimates for repairs to the agency’s van, which was involved in a wreck but is still drivable.
The Commission voted to accept the bid from Davis Body Shop, of Hiawatha, for $843, which is to be paid from the Commissioner’s fund.
The Commission met as a canvassing board to canvas the returns from the August 5th primary election.
There were 38 provisional ballots cast.  The board voted to approve the counting of 26 of the provisional ballots, with 12 not counted in accordance with State Statues.  There was no change in the outcome of any of the races.
A provisional ballot is used to record a vote when there’s a question about a given voter’s eligibility.
County Election Officer Debbie Parker reported a 24 percent voter turnout for Brown County.
