(KNZA)--The Doniphan County Commission has adopted a 2015 county budget of $10.1 million that calls for a 2.8 mill property tax levy increase.
The action came on a 2-1 vote this week following an hour long hearing drawing comments from several county residents, with Commissioner Jerry McKernan casting the lone no vote.
Three county residents voiced their opposition to raising the mill levy, while one county resident spoke in support of the proposed budget.
Under the budget, the county will collect an additional $470,000 in property tax revenue next year for a total of $5 million in taxes.
McKernan wanted to lower the mill levy increase by at least 2 mills by reducing the number of road and bridge department employees. But Commissioner David Van Laar said he wasn’t in favor of cutting employees.
Hiawatha CPA Jim Scherer, who prepared the budget, said the mill levy increase was due primarily to the loss of federal and state funding through recent law changes.
